  Dirty Work

  Chapter One

“What is she doing with that guy?” I add a few more packets of sugar to my morning coffee as my pal Greg comes into my office. I can barely focus on getting the granules into the cup because my mind is occupied by the new secretary. Her ass in that little pencil skirt has been swaying back and forth in my mind all fucking morning.

“Who? What do you mean?” Greg responds as he takes a seat across from my desk.

“You didn’t see the new secretary? She’s just my type. Petite, dark hair. Small tits. Curvy ass.” I smile and sit back in my chair and close my eyes. She’s perfect. I want her spread-eagle on my desk with my face buried between her legs after hours. And before hours. During lunch.

  All day long.

“She young?” Greg asks, grinning. It’s like he already knows what I’m going to say.

Let’s just say that I have a little bit of a reputation around the office. It’s not my fault, I swear. Put a beautiful girl in my general proximity, and I can’t help it if the next thing I know she’s throwing herself at me and unable to meet her deadlines.

The last one let it slip out that she was late for the quarterly budget meeting because I had kept her up all night.

Like I said, not my fault.

“Come on,” I respond. “You know me. Of course she’s young. Twenty-two. Just graduated.”

“So you already have your minions running intelligence on this woman?”

I take a sip of my coffee and put the paper cup down on a stack of briefs. I won’t get any work done today, but it’s okay. I pulled an all-nighter last week, so I’m in the big boss’ good graces for the foreseeable future.

“Exactly. But I also got to see her with my own two eyes. Unfortunately,” I add, “she isn’t interested. Turns out that she’s...how do I say this while still being respectful? She’s screwing some other guy.”

“How do you know this already? You have someone put together a report on her?” Greg asks.

“Come on. I talked to her. Cornered her in the cafeteria.”

  “That sounds about right.”

“I was going to ask her to come out for my 30th, but she has to go hang out with this so-called boyfriend this weekend.”

A few of my colleagues walk past my office, waving to me on their way to a meeting we’re having this morning. They remind me that I have somewhere I need to be, and I start to gather up some of the crap strewn across my desk.

“And did she offer this information or did you have to dig for it?”

“I mean, I was running my usual tact. Asking a bunch of questions. Getting information,” I explain as Greg and I make our way to the door.

“So maybe,” he says, chuckling, “she told you she had a boyfriend to get you to leave her alone. If you were cornering her. No?”

“I guess that's possible.” I hadn’t considered that as a possibility until Greg suggested it.

I’d already told her she was wasting her early 20s with this other guy. That she should be going out with her girlfriends on the weekends and letting me take care of the rest of the week, attending to her needs, cooking her meals and rubbing her feet before giving her the best orgasms of her life night after night.

Maybe Greg is right. I figure that I might have come on a little bit too strong. Maybe this was all too much for this woman’s first week out of college.

First of all, she’s in a new city and she’s settling into work. On top of it, she has the most gorgeous guy she’s ever seen hovering over her desk and telling her to ditch her boyfriend to come out to the bar for his 30th birthday.

But I could see that she liked it. Her body language told it all. The way her lips pursed into a little pout below her perfect button-nose when I came over to her. The way she touched her hair and looked a little nervous to be around me.

The more I consider it, the more confident I am that she wasn't making the boyfriend up.

“No, man,” I say to Greg. “I had to prod her a little to get the info on the boyfriend. She didn't offer it up right away. He's legit.”

“So I guess she really can't come out for your big three-zero.”

“I guess not. But I know she wants to,” I say as we enter the conference room.

  Chapter Two

I’m shuffling my papers around my desk, trying to look busy. I’ve been at this job for all of two hours and already knew it isn’t for me. It’s simple and the people seemed nice, and I need a good nine-to-five so I can earn a little money while working on my law school applications and studying for the LSAT, but this gig is mind-numbingly boring.

But I also have to admit that there is this one guy who is panty-melting, completely, totally hot.

I looked up from my desk and caught him coming into the office with his expensive leather attaché case, his shirt a little crumpled, casting his gaze over me as he passed by my desk in the reception area. He put a hand up as if to say good morning, but his eyes told me that he’d rather be saying good morning to me in bed.

And he looked like he had just rolled out of bed. Between his tousled hair and his don’t-give-a-fuck grin, he looked more suited to the pages of a glossy magazine than cooped up inside an office all day. And it was so cute the way the big boss had clasped his hand into his when he stumbled into the office, as if to say you're going places, son.

I live for guys like this.

It’s the early fall and he came into the office without a coat, and his white button down shirt sleeves were rolled up to reveal tattoos that I couldn't make out from afar but wanted to see up close. His jaw appeared to be made from steel, and it was covered by a 9 am shadow from the morning before.

He looked like he had been out all night, but he made it look good.

I’d scolded myself when I saw him. I shouldn’t be thinking about his like this. I’d even fibbed and told him that I have a boyfriend.

The absolute last thing I need is for this panty-thief to distract me from my job and my law school applications.

And anyway, he is way out of my league.

  Chapter Three

I speed through the Callahan brief by eleven so I can ask Anne to come out to lunch with me. I figure that it’s still a little too early for me to tell her straight up that she needs to dump her boyfriend, that I can treat her better than anyone can, and that I’m the guy she’s supposed to be with.

“Hey. I’m some random guy. Want to fuck?” This is what I want to say to her.

Actually, what I really want to say is, “I’m your new boyfriend. Dump that other loser. You’re mine now. And I’m yours.”

What I did say was, “What are you
doing this weekend?”

“Well, I told you that I have to go hang out with my boyfriend.” She tucks her hair behind her ears and lets her hand fall to her shoulder and down the front of her cardigan. It’s like she’s begging me to rip it off her and see what kind of bra she has on. But maybe Greg was right.

Now she’s mentioning the boyfriend without being prompted.

“No,” I say. “I don’t care who you’re hanging out with. What are you doing?”

“Oh. Right.” Her face flushes and I can’t tell if she’s embarrassed or turned on. I feel a little bad for doing that to her, but I need to get this boyfriend talk out of the way so we can start talking about more important things.

  Like our impending relationship.

“I think we are just going to dinner and a movie,” she continues.

Dinner and a movie. What a bore.

“Why don't you come out for my birthday? I’m sure that other guy won’t mind,” I say.

“Other guy?” she says, taken aback.

“Yeah. No disrespect. But how long have you two been going out?” I ask.

  “Two years.”

“Okay. That’s respectable. But I think you’re too young to be tied down to one guy.”

  One guy who isn’t me.

“I don’t know.” She looks down at her desk. “Maybe.”

She rests her arms on the desk, elbows bent, and leans over a little so I can just barely see down her shirt.

I can’t take it. The curve of her breasts under that cardigan is enough to give me heart palpitations.

“Come out to lunch with me,” I finally say. “You like veggie burgers? I know a place that has amazing homemade veggie burgers and this great aioli.”

  Chapter Four

He’s standing too close, but I don’t want him to move away from me. This feels like the smallest elevator in history, and the longest elevator ride down to the lobby, but why do I want this near-stranger to throw me against the wall and rip my clothes off?

  What’s wrong with me?

He doesn’t say anything for the whole ride. We just stand there, side by side, and I feel like he can hear my heart beating and my breath coming rapidly out of my throat. The elevator finally stops at the first floor and Bryan stops us at the security desk.

“Here, let me introduce you to Bill,” he says. “He’s great. Former NYPD cop, now runs security for the building. You’re going to have to know the building staff if you want them to take care of you. You know, let you in after hours. That kind of thing.”

“After hours?” I say nervously, trying to keep up with him. “And what would you be doing here then?”

“You know,” he says, piercing me with his green eyes and running a palm cooly through his hair. “Getting paperwork done. Other things.”

Bill turns his gaze away from the security monitors hidden below the front desk and looks at me and Bryan.

“First day?” He puts a hand out to me. It’s rough and I sense that he’s been places, seen things.

“Yes, that’s right. Bryan here was nice enough to have claimed me and is showing me the ropes.”

I hit myself in the gut with my own word.

Claimed me? Is that what he’s done? As a work friend, sure.

  But what about more?

“You think I’ve claimed you?” Bryan says with a devious look in his eye.

“Well, I should hope so,” I respond, heat pooling between my legs.

  I’m in trouble.

“We’ve finally got someone here who can play on your level, pal!” Bill slaps Bryan on the back like he’s one of the guys back in the old neighborhood.

“Watch out for this one,” Bryan says, grinning down at me and putting a hand on my shoulder. I don’t know if he means it to be reassuring or just friendly, but my clit jumps at his slight touch, and I wish I hadn’t picked out this cardigan this morning.

We step out into the brisk fall air, and I realize that I shouldn’t have left my scarf back at the office. Okay, so part of me left it on purpose. I wanted to see what Bryan would do. Maybe it’s a little bit immature, but I like being taken care of. I wanted him to know that I would be feeling a little discomfort with the cool air whipping my neck, and wanted to see what he would do about it.

“You don’t have a scarf. We can't have that.” He takes his own grey wool scarf from around his neck and faces me. “Don’t let this happen again. We can’t have you catching cold. We need you nice and healthy and happy.” He brushes my wavy brown hair away from my shoulders and wrapped his scarf around my neck, tying it gently around me and putting his hands down firmly on my shoulders.

Again, he lingers a little too close for a little too long.

I instantly feel hot, and it isn’t just because of the scarf.

  _____

“Is this our first date?” I want to push Bryan where he seems to be heading, and I’m not afraid of scaring him away.

I’m beginning to realize that I want him, but I need to gauge whether he is really interested in me or if he just wants to keep it casual. Fuck me once, and then be done with me. From the looks of him, from how gorgeous and sexy he is, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if all of his antics were for show - regardless of how genuine he seems.

“Yeah. I guess it is.” He smiles. “How do you like the place?”

He doesn’t seem to be freaked out. He seems content, at ease. Even happy. As though this is a guy who really wants to date me.

Come on. This guy is playing a game. This is typical. You’ve been through all of this before. Gorgeous guy wants to get laid. You sleep with him. You’re naive. It's such a simple story, and you’re not going down this path again. Don’t let him work his magic on you. It’s too much, it’s too fast, and it’s certainly too good to be true.

“So, how many guys have you been with?”

Bryan takes a sip from his ice water as he scans the menu.

“Excuse me?” Okay, now maybe he is crossing a line. “That’s really inappropriate.”

“Why? Aren’t we dating? It’s not like I care or will judge you. I just want to make sure that you’ve had enough guys before we settle down together. I don’t want you to ever feel unsatisfied with me. So if you haven’t had sex with enough guys yet, you know. You should go do that.”

“I thought you said that I was wasting my time with my boyfriend and that I should be out getting laid every weekend. I didn’t realize before that you were my new boyfriend.”

“Look, Anne, you’re the one who keeps bringing up your boyfriend. I just want you to be happy.”

“Does this crap work with other girls?” I smile, even though I’m struggling to keep a straight face and not show my hand. I’m also trying to deny to myself that his questions are making me wet.

“I don’t know if it works with other girls. Is it working with you? That’s all I care about.”

“How about you?” I ask, trying to shift the focus away from myself. “How many women have you been with? Are you ready to settle down? It is your thirtieth birthday, after all.”

“I’m ready when you are. It doesn't matter how many women I’ve been with. I don’t need anyone else anymore.”

My heart jumps into my throat again. Bryan is making me feel like I’m already falling for him.

  Chapter Five

I guess I’ve decided to go out to Bryan’s birthday party tonight, even though I feel insane for being so into this random guy already. I slip a simple black mini dress over her head and smooth it down against my hips. I take my hair out of the low ponytail it’s been tied back in all day. I feel like a total cliche. I feel like the dorky girl in a ‘90s teen comedy who takes off her glasses and pulls her hair out of her ponytail and suddenly transforms from a dweeb to a beauty queen in two seconds flat.

Except I’m not a beauty queens. Not even close.

I check myself in the full-length mirror behind my door. I wish my hair was shinier, my hips a little slimmer, my stomach a littl
e flatter. Bryan is way out of my league.

My phone beeps, and it’s Liz, one of the nice girls I met at work that day and exchanged numbers with.

Hey, lady. Any chance you’ll come out tonight?

I’m about to respond that, yes, I would be coming out, and was looking forward to it. I certainly wouldn't mention that she was excited and nervous to see Bryan and that it’s my absolute fantasy to make out with him, even though we work together and it’s all sorts of inappropriate and against the employee code of conduct to engage in that kind of thing with a coworker.
